Investing in Health: A New Chapter for the Coffeehouse Investor
Thirty years ago, I was focused on financial security—making smart investments, building my career, and ensuring a stable future. I gave little thought to maintaining health beyond my natural energy and endurance of running marathons, climbing mountains, and bicycling century races.
Now, at 65, my perspective has shifted. Financial stability no longer keeps me up at night. What does? If anything, it is the realization that good health must be nurtured, just like a well-constructed portfolio.
If you're over 55, I challenge you—just as I am challenging myself—to invest in your well-being with the same discipline we applied to our finances over the past 30 years. The habits we cultivate now determine the quality of our retirement years over the next quarter century and beyond, and the dividends of a healthy lifestyle are priceless.
EXERCISE: Movement is Wealth
Much like compounding interest, consistent movement builds vitality. Whether it’s daily walks, cycling, swimming, or hiking, every effort contributes to long-term well-being. A sedentary lifestyle is one of the greatest risks we face—so let’s commit to staying active.
NUTRITION: Fuel for Longevity
Just as we carefully select investments, we must be mindful of what we put on our plate. Whole foods, lean proteins, and plenty of vegetables nourish the body in ways processed foods cannot. Treating meals as an investment in our future means avoiding shortcuts that drain energy and vitality.
SLEEP: The Ultimate Recovery Plan
Financial success is worthless without the energy to enjoy it. Prioritizing sleep is essential. It restores the body, sharpens the mind, and reduces stress. Aim for seven to nine hours each night and treat it like the most valuable asset in your portfolio.
REFLECTION: Mental Wealth
Meditation, journaling, or simply setting aside time for quiet reflection can sharpen our perspective and alleviate the noise of daily life. Learning to embrace stillness and mindfulness is just as valuable as keeping a balanced budget.
Community: The Greatest Investment
Perhaps the most underrated pillar of well-being is social connection. Spending time with friends in healthy, engaging activities—group hikes, cooking together, even simple coffee chats—keeps us mentally sharp and emotionally fulfilled. A strong social circle is the foundation of a life well-lived.
As investors in our future, let’s take a deliberate, disciplined approach to health. The time is now. Our greatest wealth isn’t in a brokerage account—it’s in our ability to live fully, vibrantly, and with purpose.
Let’s thrive. Let’s invest in the years ahead.
